The Family Rules exercise was the first piece of therapy work that I did when I started my own childhood trauma work twenty-five years ago.
The exercise is past and present focused where you do work around each rule that resonates with you.
In my practice, I begin to work with clients to process and train the adult part to think and name how present reactions are rooted in childhood. The ability to do so gives them so much control and insight about their stuck places and problems.
